In thinking how to better present Amsterdam to our guests, you tap into my own fascination walking these quaint streets, filled with history and the visual outlines of many adventurous journeys that have taken place since the Golden Age. This is what we call the 17th century when Amsterdam grew from a very humble fisherman’s village always flooded by sea and the rivers, into a powerful and wealthy nation of commerce and social splendor during the early renaissance in Europe.
In that time, you could be a Catholic, but your rituals should be performed in secrecy. One of the attractions you may visit is called “Our Lord in the Attic”. Or the secret Catholic church found in the Begijnhof. Noteworthy is that across from the chapel inside the Begijnhof is the old English chapel which was visited by the Pilgrims before the journey to America in the Mayflower.
In the midst of this prosperity, the city of Amsterdam became the epicenter of the old world where beautiful canals were dug, offering parcels to build sumptuous houses in the 1600’s. Our most bespoke tour, is to view these places from a private salon boat that slowly goes through the city canals with a private captain. Either during the day or in the evenings, while enjoying a beautiful meal and some drinks. Especially winter period the Amsterdam Light Festival is in full swing.
Amsterdam is a mixture of the old and the modern. Contemporary art is displayed right next to the world-famous works of the Dutch Masters from the Golden Age; Rembrandt, Frans Hals and Vermeer to name a few, have their place of pride in the Rijksmuseum. What I truly love to share, is one of the most unique and unknown places; Six House. Of all collectors of Dutch Golden Age art throughout the ages, the Six family has had one of its members portrayed by Rembrandt himself, but also, centuries later their descendants still live on the grand premises of their mansion by the Amstel. They own the most splendid works of art, silverware and furniture; a collection that was inherited and added to by generations of family members. This extraordinary address with a river view, houses the most comprehensive private archives of finance, politics, artistry and society of the prosperous years of the Dutch Golden Age.
And by ending the day, I cannot forget to recommend a local cuisine. Step into a 1600’s house where you meet the history of the Golden Age with the local taste with the ingredients from the countryside. Even if you had enough museum visits during the day, this is a must-try.
Amsterdam that has a vibrant pulse, with so many stories and places to stroll into. It is infinitely much more than just art and culture. When my guests leave, I see that they take the city in their hearts home with them. Amsterdam, a city you can never forget.
